00:05 - you've knocked down a wall with Burma 00:07 - you knocked down a bigger wall of Cuba 00:10 - and potentially you're going to knock 00:11 - down a really big wall with Iran I 00:14 - actually started as a journalist in 1979 00:17 - I realized my whole career has only been 00:18 - defined by hostility and from my whole 00:20 - generation in this relationship I feel 00:23 - like underneath there is a bit of an 00:25 - Obama doctrine in there and it's take 00:28 - care of all the strategic concerns 00:29 - satisfy them as much as you can but you 00:32 - you do believe that the engagement is 00:36 - possible that that engagement can lead 00:39 - to different outcomes that are 00:40 - unpredictable you know in advance can it 00:44 - do I have that right well how do you see 00:46 - it you know what I'd combine it with 00:48 - though tom is also a sense that we are 00:53 - powerful enough to be able to test these 00:55 - propositions without putting ourselves 00:57 - at risk that's interesting and and and 00:59 - and that's the thing that sometimes as I 01:02 - hear these debates going on people don't 01:05 - seem to understand you take some country 01:08 - like Cuba for us to test the possibility 01:15 - that engagement leads to a better 01:18 - outcome for the Cuban people there 01:21 - aren't that many risks for us too it's a 01:24 - tiny little country it's it's not one 01:28 - that threatens our core security 01:31 - interests and so for us to test the 01:36 - proposition and if it turns out that it 01:40 - doesn't lead to better outcomes we can 01:42 - adjust our policies the same is true 01:45 - with respect to Iran a larger country a 01:47 - dangerous country one that has engaged 01:50 - in activities that result in the death 01:51 - of US citizens but the truth the matter 01:54 - is Iran's defense budget is 30 billion 01:57 - dollars our defense budget is closer to 02:02 - six hundred billion dollars 02:04 - Iran understands that they cannot fight 02:06 - us and you believe they are determined 02:08 - it's nothing that they're under turrible 02:10 - is simply not the case and and so the so 02:13 - for us to say let's try understanding 02:17 - that we're preserving all our options 02:18 - that were not naive but if in fact we 02:23 - can resolve these issues diplomatically 02:25 - we are more likely to be safe more 02:28 - likely to be secured in a better 02:30 - position to protect our allies and who 02:33 - knows Iran may change if it doesn't art 02:36 - deterrence capabilities our military 02:39 - superiority stays in place so ill to to 02:42 - use a simple analogy it's not as if in 02:46 -all these conversations I'm leaving all 02:49 - my you know rifles that you know at the 02:54 - door we're walking these negotiations 02:56 - and everybody knows that we've got the 02:59 - most firepower and and and we're not 03:01 - relinquishing our capacity to defend 03:05 - ourselves or our allies in that 03:07 - situation why wouldn't we test it it and 03:11 - and now you know what you might hear 03:14 - from Prime Minister Netanyahu which 03:16 - which I respect is the notion look 03:19 - Israel's more vulnerable we don't have 03:21 - the luxury of testing these propositions 03:23 - the way you do and and I completely 03:28 - understand that and further I completely 03:30 - understand Israel's belief that given 03:33 - the tragic history of the Jewish people 03:35 - they can't be dependent solely on us for 03:38 - their own security but what I would say 03:41 - to them is that not only am I absolutely 03:46 - committed to making sure that they 03:49 - maintain their kwaliteit qualitative 03:51 - military edge and that they can before 03:54 - defer deter any potential future attacks 04:00 - but what I'm going to do is to make the 04:06 - kinds of commitments that would give 04:11 - everybody in the neighborhood including 04:14 - Iran clarity that if Israel were to be 04:19 - attacked by any state that we would 04:23 - stand stand by them and and that I think 04:27 - should be you've just made that 04:31 - commitment right now I mean that's a 04:32 - signal to them that should that should 04:34 - be sufficient to take advantage of this 04:44 - once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see 04:47 - whether or not we can at least take the 04:49 - nuclear issue off the table the one 04:52 - thing that changes the equation is when 04:55 - these countries get a nuclear weapon 04:57 - then how we approach countries 05:02 - necessarily changes you know witnessed 05:06 - North Korea which is a problem state 05:09 - that is rendered a lot more dangerous 05:15 - because of of their nuclear program if 05:17 - we can prevent that from happening in 05:19 - any place else in the world that's 05:23 - that's something where it's worth taking 05:25 - some risks 05:29 - Oh
Aspectos Notables
